Football tips Grand Prix Drivers` Association on fines for swearing: We call on the FIA President to monitor his own language and ensure financial transparency

F1 pilots sharply criticized the FIA fines. The Grand Prix Drivers` Association issued a statement strongly opposing the punishment of Red Bull and Ferrari drivers Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc for swearing at press conferences.
In addition, the athletes spoke out against monetary fines in general and for greater transparency from the FIA.
Verstappen was punished with community service, Leclerc with a fine of 10, 000 euros.
As in any sport, participants must follow the judge`s decisions, whether they like them or not, whether they agree with them or not. This is how sports work. The racers (our members) are no different and fully understand this.
Our members are professional drivers who compete in Formula 1, the pinnacle of international motorsport. These are the gladiators who put on a great show for the fans every weekend.
When it comes to swearing, there is a difference between swearing intended to offend others and more everyday language - say, you might describe bad weather, an inanimate object such as a Formula 1 car, or a situation in a race.
We urge the FIA President [Mohammed bin Sulayem] to be mindful of his own tone and expressions when addressing or discussing drivers, publicly or privately. Moreover, our members are adults; they do not need instructions through the press about such trivial matters as the use of jewelry and underwear.
The Association has stated countless times that monetary fines to pilots are inappropriate in our sport. For the past three years we have called on the FIA President to share details of how fines are distributed and where the funds are allocated. We also expressed concern about the negative impact of monetary fines on the image of our sport. We again demand that the FIA President ensure financial transparency and direct, open dialogue with us. All stakeholders (FIA, F1, teams and the Association) must work together to determine where the money should go for the benefit of our sport.
The Association is committed to working constructively with all stakeholders, including the FIA President, to promote our wonderful sport for the benefit of all who work in, pay for, watch and love it. We are playing our part, " the statement said.
